We use the Switch It game 1 - CVC Words in our specialist tutoring centre here at Starfish.
It is the perfect card game for learners beginning their literacy journey. This fun and quick game involves decoding consonant vowel consonant words. There is a bonus gold level for introducing common consonant digraphs.
If your child knows many of the common sounds of the alphabet, then they can start playing this game. It is a fabulous way to learn and master decoding (reading). It encourages blending sounds together to read words.
Shuffle the cards and deal each player 7 cards. The remainder are placed face down on the table with one card flipped up. Players take turns placing a card on the discard pile (by colour or number) but must read their word first in order to complete their turn. If they do not have a suitable card, they may play a switch it card (to change the colour) if they have one in their hand. Otherwise they'll need to pick another card up from the deck.
First player to get rid of all their cards, wins!
