We use the Switch It game 2 - Consonant Vowel Combination Words in our specialist tutoring centre here at Starfish.

It is the perfect card game for learners on their literacy journey. This fun and quick game involves decoding a range of consonant vowel combinations, including: CVCC, CCVC, CCVCC and words with triple consonant blends.

We love that there is a bonus gold level set of cards that you can add for even more challenge once your children are ready.

If your child knows the common sounds of the alphabet, and they are able to decode and blend simple CVC words (such as in the Switch it level 1 game), then this game is perfect for them.

It is a fabulous way to learn and master decoding (reading). It encourages blending sounds together to read words. 

Shuffle the cards and deal each player 7 cards. The remainder are placed face down on the table with one card flipped up. Players take turns placing a card on the discard pile (by colour or number) but must read their word first in order to complete their turn. If they don not have a suitable card, they may play a switch it card (to change the colour) if they have one in their hand. Otherwise they'll need to pick another card up from the deck.  

First player to get rid of all their cards wins!
